  • KEVICC Students Celebrate GCSE Success in Totnes

Students at King Edward VI Community College (KEVICC) in Totnes, part of Education South West, have been celebrating collecting their GCSE results this week (21st Aug), marking an exciting milestone in their education journey.

There was plenty to celebrate, with students achieving some excellent outcomes across a broad range of subjects. These results reflect not only the hard work and commitment of the students themselves but also the outstanding support from KEVICC’s dedicated teaching and pastoral teams.

At KEVICC, student wellbeing is central to everything the school does. Every young person is seen and supported as an individual, thanks to the school’s highly skilled Heads of House and a deeply personalised approach to education. Whether academic, creative, or practical, the school’s curriculum allows each learner to thrive in a way that best suits their aspirations and talents.

Staff are incredibly proud of the students, many of whom have not only met but exceeded their target grades this year.

    • Roxy achieved her targets across all subjects and will be pursuing her passion for Art & Design.
    • Benny Williams secured outstanding results, with grades ranging from 9–7 in every subject, and will be continuing his studies with A Levels at Kennicott.
    • Emily achieved an excellent set of results, with grades between 4–6, and will also progress to A Levels at Kennicott.
    • Elsie achieved an incredible batch of GCSEs, with 5 grade 9s and 4 grade 8s, and is looking to continue this success to her A-level programme at Kennicott

KEVICC welcomed Ofsted inspectors to the school in June.  In their report, they recognised that the school has high expectations of pupil conduct and that pupils value the calm working environment during lessons.  They concluded that students achieve well in their qualifications.

The school’s curriculum was singled out for praise with it being described as ambitious and well-sequenced for pupils at all key stages.  Furthermore, Ofsted stated that the broad range of subjects offered enables pupils to study qualifications aligned to their future aspirations.

Alan Salt, Principal at KEVICC said:
“I’m incredibly proud of all our students who received their results today. These outcomes are the result of their commitment, creativity and resilience and the tireless support of our brilliant staff. It’s a joy to see so many of them moving on to our Sixth Form at Kennicott or exciting next steps elsewhere. This is a school rooted in community and co-operative values, and these results show just how much our students benefit from that.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:
Congratulations to all KEVICC students on their GCSE achievements today. These fantastic results are a credit to their hard work, as well as the care and professionalism of the staff who support them. We wish every student continued success and happiness in the years ahead.”

  • Kennicott Students Celebrate Outstanding A-Level Results

There were celebrations in Totnes this morning as students at Kennicott Sixth Form Centre collected their A Level results.

Staff, students and families gathered to mark another year of excellent outcomes. This year’s results reflect the dedication, hard work and ambition of students across a wide range of subjects.

Students had much to be proud of and the achievements of every student are celebrated. Head of Sixth Form, Amy Withers comments: ‘Behind every set of outcomes there is a story, and every student has worked hard to overcome challenges and to grow both personally and academically during their time at Sixth Form. Today is the culmination of that hard work and effort, which it has been a privilege to be a part of. My very best wishes go to all of our students as they move forward to their next steps.’

Daisy Johnson will be heading to the University of Cambridge, to study Natural Sciences and achieved A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as an A grade in Further Maths and EPQ; Anna Jones will be studying History at University of Liverpool, having achieved an A* in Sociology, A in English Literature and B in History; Kassia Panitzke-Jones takes up a place at the University of Exeter to study English and History and achieved A grades in English Literature, Philosophy and EPQ and a B in History. Kassia says ‘I am so pleased to have spent the last 2 years at Kennicott. The teachers are so very supportive and lovely. My classmates have been wonderful too. I will miss it all so much!’

James Waddell commented that ‘Kennicott is a really great college and I’m really grateful to have been supported to get to university.’ James will be studying Politics at Oxford Brookes University.

Holly Whittles achieved AAB in English Literature, Art and Sociology. Charlotte Lewis, Jack DeVere and Sasha Barrett secured Double Distinction Stars in their applied Sports course, and will be studying at Plymouth Marjon and Loughborough.

Kennicott prides itself on being more than just a place to study. Set in a unique and inspiring environment, it offers a caring, student-focused community where students are known and supported as individuals. With strong personal tutor relationships, excellent teaching, and a culture of high expectations, students are empowered to achieve their potential—whether heading to university, apprenticeships, creative industries or employment.

Following an Ofsted inspection this year, inspectors noted that pupils and sixth-form students are proud to attend King Edward VI Community College and that the school has worked hard to create a community where pupils feel they belong. They also commented on how the school community has been built on a foundation of kindness and respect.

Alan Salt, Principal at KEVICC  said:
“It’s a real pleasure to celebrate with our Sixth Formers today. Their results are a reflection not only of their commitment and resilience, but also the support, care and quality of education they’ve received at Kennicott. We’re proud to have helped so many of them secure exciting futures, whether at university, in employment or further training. Kennicott is a truly special place, and these outcomes speak for themselves.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:
“Huge congratulations to the students at Kennicott who received their A-Level results today. Their achievements are a testament to their effort and the excellent support they’ve received. It’s fantastic to hear about the diverse range of next steps our students are taking and we wish them every success on their journeys ahead.”

  • King Edward VI Community College Celebrates Ofsted ‘Good’ Rating

King Edward VI Community College has welcomed Ofsted inspectors this term as part of a Section 8 inspection.

A section 8 Ofsted inspection is an ungraded inspection that confirms whether a school has maintained its good or outstanding status and that safeguarding is still effective.  At its last full inspection the school was deemed to be Good and inspectors have now confirmed that KEVICC has continued to meet these high standards.

Inspectors noted that pupils and sixth-form students are proud to attend King Edward VI Community College and that the school has worked hard to create a community where pupils feel they belong. They also commented on how the school community has been built on a foundation of kindness and respect.

In their report, inspectors also recognised that the school has high expectations of pupil conduct and that pupils value the calm working environment during lessons.

    Inspectors additionally noted that:

    • The school swiftly identifies the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). These pupils also receive well-considered additional support when appropriate. For example, pupils benefit from high-quality communication interventions.
    • The school’s careers guidance offer prepares pupils for making key decisions about qualifications and future plans. Pupils are well informed about potential pathways into apprenticeships and higher education. They are encouraged to be aspirational for their future. Pupils move successfully to their next stages of education, training or employment.
    • The importance of reading is promoted throughout the school. Pupils read regularly individually and as a class. They enjoy choosing the books from the ‘KEVICC Cannon’. This diverse collection of books has been chosen to promote reading for pleasure and encourage discussion.
    • The school has a clear ambition for pupils to develop their own individual characters. The school commits to this with the #keepthepromise extra-curricular pledge. The school’s ‘11 by 11’ challenge encourages pupils to try something new. Clubs such as creative writing, marine biology and drama help to develop pupils’ talents and interests.

Alan Salt, Principal of King Edward VI Community College, said:

“I am delighted that Ofsted have recognised the vision KEVICC and Education South West share for the school, to be a truly inclusive place that sits at the very heart of our local community. This recognition affirms the work we’ve done to create a nurturing, ambitious and respectful culture, where every student is supported to flourish.

“I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our exceptional staff team for their dedication, creativity, and professionalism. Their work every day makes KEVICC such a special place. I’d also like to thank our wonderful students, whose energy, curiosity and kindness embody everything we stand for. Finally, my gratitude goes to our families and the wider Totnes community for their continued support and belief in what we’re doing here. This is a shared achievement.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, said:

“Everyone at ESW is so proud of Mr Salt and his team for this glowing report.  It was wonderful to read that Ofsted could see that the collaborative curriculum work across the trust is minimising the impact on workload for staff and that the genuine care for staff well being means they feel invested in and are proud to work at the school.

“It’s inspiring to see Ofsted recognise not only the calm, inclusive and aspirational culture at KEVICC, but also the strength of the school’s leadership and community values.”

  • Devon Family Hubs Update We are still offering Single sessions via the Parent request for contact , and our Advice and Guidance line will still be active for parents to make contact Devon Family HUBS - Parent Carer Request for Contact Advice and guidance Line 0800 538 5458 (Mon-Fri 10am- 4pm) TRANSITION TO NEW FAMILY HUBS SERVICE FOR DEVON From 1 April 2025, the Family Hubs service for Devon will be transitioning to a new service which will provide increased, targeted help to support families in the community. Last year, Devon County Council announced that like many authorities across the country, it would follow Government guidance in developing the previous Children's Centres into Family Hubs which provided open access to all families without the need for referrals. Since then, the council has conducted consultations with families, to gauge opinion and develop a plan which will now see support for families provided in village halls, community centres, and other existing places that parents and carers will already be familiar with in their local communities. The purpose behind Family Hubs is to provide support to families with children from 0 to 19, or to 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The help families receive is to prevent them from needing more targeted help later on. "Why should a parent with a young child or children, who might rely on public transport to get around, have to travel miles to their nearest Children's Centre building in order to get the help his or her family needs? Providing support to families, in their communities, at the right time can prevent them from needing more targeted support in future. I wish to thank Action for Children for their dedication and contribution to Children’s Services over the last 20 years” says Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, the Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for children's services. From April, families will begin to see a new community-focused service developing that will continue to improve access to support, bringing together education, public health, NHS, early years, community and voluntary sector groups. Parents will be directed to them in settings closer to home in their own communities. Some group sessions that are currently delivered in Family Hub locations will change, with families who have complex needs being referred to other community-based services through the new system from April. Devon County Council would sincerely like to thank Action for Children for all their hard work and contribution to the running of Devon’s Children’s Centres and the Family Hubs for the last 20 years.
